David Slater: Remembering Wounded Knee
In February of 1973, a 71 day standoff began between members of the Oglala Lakota tribe, joined by followers of the American Indian Movement, and federal authorities in the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota. The Wounded Knee Occupation was performed in protest against government policy and corruption within the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Amongst the AIM protesters was artist David Slater. In this series of paintings, the two-time Pollock-Krasner Foundation grantee presents his own memories of his experience in the occupation, filtered through the passage of years.
